Live updates: Collective bargaining bill debate in Iowa

Erin Murphy is providing live updates as the Iowa House and Senate both are scheduled to debate the collective bargaining bill today.

The Senate voted down Sen. Johnson's amendment to strike the bill and have a state board examine the need for collective bargaining reform. As with others, the amendment was defeated on party lines.

Immediately after, Democrats said they would go to caucus, so the debate in the Senate once again is paused.

Meantime in the House, they're back and debating again. Still on that first amendment.

One last update tonight. The House finally had a vote ... Republicans defeated the Democrats' first amendment, which would have erased the bill. So they're done with the first of 79 amendments.

The Senate is still debating, but either way this will carry into tomorrow, a third day.

Wow. I'm going to get y'all caught up as soon and as best I can, but for now I'm posting updates from my Twitter account (which also come here). But two huge things to note right now: the Senate debated through the night, and the House is now voting to end debate by noon today, regardless of how many amendments remain.

OK, so we now know the collective bargaining debate will conclude today in the Iowa House.

So how about the Senate?

The Senate does not have on its books the same rule in the House that allowed House Republicans to cut off debate. However, Senate Republicans in the majority could, theoretically, rewrite that chamber's rules this morning to implement that rule and also cut off debate today.

Will they? We'll have to see. We'll watch, ask and report back to you. Stay tuned.

I just tuned into the Senate debate (I'm physically in the House), and it sounds like they're debating a similar Democratic amendment, one that would expand the public safety workers exempted from the bill's changes.
