... and a big night in general. One of the wonderful things about watching the GRAMMYs is the way they take you back while leading you forward. There’s something for everyone during the show, not only genre-wise, but also age-wise. The multi-generational element that’s cooked in cannot be denied, and ought to be celebrated. So: go grab your great aunt and your 11-year-old cousin and come back for more breathtaking performances and awards!
It's a big night for shorts.
Best Pop Solo Performance props to Pharrell!
... but where is Tom Jones' man cleavage tonight?
Tom Jones and Jessie J are divvying up the emotional investment this song deserves, taking it seriously. Playing it right, in other words. Respect!
This gem, of course, is “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’.” Remember the Hall & Oates version? Maybe it’s the classic Righteous Brothers one you best recall. A sad song, but a gorgeous one. Really poignant.
Earlier, Jessie J tweeted that she was excited and a "little overwhelmed" about her performance with Tom Jones tonight.
Here they’re saluting the great Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, who wrote songs for everybody from Eydie Gorme to Three Dog Night.
It’s not unusual to see those two teamed up, is it? OK, maybe a little. But I like it!
Just a little bit of your heart is what she wanted, but the Staples Center crowd is giving her more than a little love. Quite a lot, in fact. And so are you at home, I bet. What do you think?
Was anybody surprised that Sam Smith took home the GRAMMY for Best New Artist?
The timing of this tender performance couldn’t be better, with Valentine’s Day less than a week off. Speaking of valentines: Cat Valentine has come a long way.
… and the pedigree behind this pretty ballad! It was written by One Direction’s Harry Styles (swoon).
First-time nominee Ariana is up for two GRAMMYs: Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop/Duo Group Performance for her megahit "Bang Bang,” with Jessie J and Nicki Minaj.
Here she is, the grand Ms. Grande, in her slender, elegant glory. This is Ariana’s “Just a Little Bit of Your Heart,” off her 2014 smash “My Everything.”
Anna Kendrick in a snazzy suit
And let’s not let the opening storm that was AC/DC slip our memories. What’s your favorite AC/DC tune? Pretty hard to argue with “Back in Black” ...
Hell’s bells! They’ve segued into the classic “Highway To Hell.” The thunder from Down Under are ripping it up.
Last year was kind of rough for AC/DC, despite the release of their 15th studio album: Not sure if you’ll remember, but drummer Phil Rudd ran into some weird and kind of disturbing legal trouble, and founding member Malcolm Young left the band.
Cool shorts! Angus Young’s trademark school-uniform outfit made some fashion waves in the 70s. Or, at the very least, made him a guy who stood out, sartorially speaking. Was he a walking contradiction? The shorts made him look so innocent …
Who remembers?
@showbizshelly has on her devil horns.
This is their new song, “Rock or Bust,” off the same-named album released in November. I don’t foresee any busting, because they’re doing A LOT of rocking, am I right?
GRAMMY Fact: This is AC/DC's first time performing on the GRAMMY stage! But the rock veterans are no strangers to the GRAMMYs; they previously won Best Hard Rock Performance for 2009 for "War Machine."
Just a minute to go, everybody, and if you’ve been following the buzz you know you’re in for a heap of A-list performances. The show always starts with a bang, and I have a premonition that this year’s is going to be especially loud.
