The story goes that the Academy's Executive Secretary, Margaret Herrick saw a statuette in 1931 and said it looked like Uncle Oscar, which was a nickname for her cousin Oscar Pierce. The award officially earned the title “Oscar” from the Academy in 1939. But there's really no official story of how it earned its name.
